Yesterday Bangladesh and Bengalis around the world celebrated Poyla Boyshaki, the Bangla New Year (1406). It’s traditional to get up and go downtown to celebrate at sunrise (!) but since we slept through that, here are some pictures from the celebration at the American Club:

December 16th is Bangladesh’s Victory Day, the day that Bangladesh won their war of independence against Pakistan in 1971. A few pics from around town today:

We wandered out on Eid morning to see how the whole sacrifice thing actually works. Turns out, it’s much as you would imagine sacrificing a cow. Thanks to M for managing to take these pictures – I had to look away!

Eid Mubarak

Today is Eid ul-Adha, or sacrificial Eid, the one where everyone sacrifices an animal. In their front yard. (A slightly more informed take on it – this commemorates Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael to God, and God’s mercy in providing a lamb instead for him to sacrifice.)
